Green energy in Uzbekistan: A path toward energy independence and export potential

By 2030, Uzbekistan aims to increase the share of renewables in its total energy mix to 54%, with a target installed capacity of 27 GW.

The country’s green transformation is being shaped by several strategic priorities:

✔️Solar power is a top priority in Uzbekistan’s renewable energy strategy. As of early 2025, the country operates 11 solar power plants with a total installed capacity of 4.06 GW. These plants produced 1.16 billion kWh of electricity in the first months of 2025 alone. Notable projects include large-scale solar facilities in the Kashkadarya and Bukhara regions.

✔️ Uzbekistan’s wind energy sector is experiencing rapid development. By the end of 2024, the country had 501 MW of installed wind power capacity. Major wind projects are underway in Karakalpakstan and Navoi regions. One key milestone is the completion of the first phase of a 500 MW wind farm in Tamdy District (https://www.gazeta.uz/ru/2023/12/27/green-energy/).

✔️ By 2024, the capacity of hydropower plants reached 2,391 MW. The construction of new HPPs and the modernization of existing ones are planned, which will further increase capacity and ensure stable energy supply.

✔️ Uzbekistan is actively attracting private investment into the energy sector through public-private partnership (PPP) mechanisms. Key partners include companies from the UAE, China, and Saudi Arabia.
